Job Description

About the company:

Our client is a prominent national commercial law firm with a strong presence in Melbourne and other key Australian markets. The firm has grown from a leading insurance practice into a full service commercial offering, with recognised expertise in commercial litigation and dispute resolution, construction and projects, corporate and commercial, property and workplace.

The disputes team acts for local and international insurers, listed and private companies, financial institutions, government entities and large privately owned businesses. Matters frequently involve complex contractual and indemnity issues, multi party disputes and proceedings across various state and federal courts and tribunals.

The culture is professional and commercial, with a focus on collaboration between offices, approachable partners and maintaining a friendly and inclusive environment where people can build long term.

About the position:

Our client is seeking an Associate or Senior Associate level commercial litigator to join its Melbourne Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution team.
In this role you will;
  • Manage a portfolio of litigated and pre litigated disputes, with guidance from senior practitioners
  • Work across a wide range of matters including contract and trade practices disputes, shareholder and partnership disputes, misleading and deceptive conduct claims and debt recovery
  • Act on complex insurance related disputes for corporate and government clients where relevant
  • Assist on significant construction and infrastructure disputes, including security of payment issues, defect claims and delay or variation disputes
  • Support regulatory investigations and enforcement matters with exposure to regulators and Royal Commission style processes where they arise
  • Prepare detailed written advice, pleadings, evidence and settlement documentation, and appear at mediations, conferences and directions hearings as appropriate to your level
You will enjoy a varied file load, regular client contact and the chance to develop niche expertise while still maintaining a broad commercial litigation practice. This suits a lawyer who is comfortable running matters independently but also wants access to national resources and a strong partner group.

Key Requirements:
  • 3-7 years post admission experience in commercial litigation or dispute resolution
  • Strong written advocacy skills and attention to detail in pleadings and evidence
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines and a varied litigation practice
  • Confidence dealing with sophisticated commercial clients and other stakeholders
On offer:
  • Salary band from $135,000 to $175,000 incl super, aligned to experience and level
  • Access to complex and interesting litigation for leading national and international clients
  • Genuine progression opportunities within a growing disputes team, including partnership potential for the right person over time
  • National firm support, including professional development programs, mentoring and opportunities to collaborate with colleagues in other offices
  • A supportive and inclusive culture that values diversity, collegiality and practical solutions for clients
